She also worked for the FBI in Washington DC. She loved her job, worked hard, and wanted to work even after diagnosed with cancer. It was very difficult for her to give up working because she worked so hard her entire life, often working 3 jobs at a time to support and care for her family. Once she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on July 3, 2013, Eva was filled with shock, disbelief, depression, fear, and pain. It was very difficult for her to come to terms with the prognosis of this horrible disease but her will to live shined through as she believed in miracles. Eva loved her family beyond what words can express and she wanted nothing more than to have more time to make beautiful memories with those she loved. She was an exceptional woman. She was loyal, hard working, honest, trustworthy, responsible, giving, caring, thoughtful, and kind. Sadly, she did not get her miracle but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her most.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at pancan.org to advance research, support patients, and create hope for those faced with Pancreatic Cancer. November is also Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Ed is survived by his brother, Thomas J. (Loretta) of Coloma, Michigan; sisters Martha Sabol of Perry and Kathleen Dolney of Painesville; nieces Jennifer Powers and Meghan Dolney, both of Chicago, Illinois; nephews Martin Powers of Orland Park, Illinois and John Sabol of Perry; aunt Antoinette Powers of Willoughby; uncle Raymond Powers of Cleveland, and cousins in Ohio, Florida, California, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Ed was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joseph C. (1975) and Hannah T. (Nan) Powers (2007), brother Martin J. Powers (2003), and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ed attended St. Mary School (Painesville), and was a 1968 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated magna cum laude in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications. While at ND, he was involved in many campus organizations, but was proudest of his role as sports commentator for the campus radio station. Ed’s law career began in 1978 as a law clerk for prosecutor John Shoop. During his law school tenure, he earned second place awards in both the Dean’s Moot Court Competition and the Law Alumni Moot Court Competition. He graduated from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1980 with a Juris Doctor Degree. That same year he served as a judge for the Moot Court Competition at Cleveland-Marshall. After passing the bar exam in 1981, Ed was employed by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. He remained there until 1986 when he went into private practice. He made two bids for public office: in 1988 for Painesville Municipal Court Judge and in 1990 as State Representative. In 1992 he was hired as the prosecutor for both Painesville City and Madison Township Police Departments. He developed a working relationship of mutual respect with both departments, had an impeccable reputation for both fairness and honesty, and formed lasting friendships. He was a well-respected member of the Lake County Bar Association.

Ed was devoted to his Catholic faith. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church in Painesville where he had previously served as a lector at Sunday Mass. He belonged to the Holy Name Society and was a member of Parish Council. He had been a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #947 for forty-one years. At the age of 25, Ed was elected Grand Knight of the Painesville Council. He was the second youngest serving knight of the council, only having been outdone by his Dad! He also served as District Deputy for several years and was a member of the Fourth Degree Cardinal Newman Assembly #837 of Lake County. Other community involvement included being a past member of the Camp Sue Osborn Board. Family was important to Ed. He had fond memories of childhood and loved to embellish them in the retelling. He cherished the time he spent with his parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. All family members were fair game when it came to his sense of humor! He was an avid sports fan who could accurately quote statistics from high school, college, and pro games from forty years ago, be they football, basketball, or baseball. He relished the challenge of beating his co-workers at the police department in the fantasy football league. He had a sense of humor that could put most comedians to shame and spared no one in the process – victims advocates, policemen, clerks, or judges. He will be remembered for that impressive left eyebrow which silently displayed his opinion on any given topic.

In Lieu of flowers donations made be made in Ed’s memory to: St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Mary’s; Villa Angela /St. Joseph High School; or to a favorite charity of your choice.
