Dennis Laurie

Dennis S. Laurie, age 76, of Perry, Ohio, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Lantern of Madison.  He was born May 24, 1940 in Morgantown, West Virginia to Virginia (Fisher) and Samuel Laurie.

He attended schools in Morgantown, graduating from Morgantown High School in 1958.  After graduation, he went to West Virginia University where he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in education.

He began his teaching career at Riverside Jr. High in Morgantown, teaching there for two years.  He and his wife then moved to Ohio, settling in Perry.

Dennis taught at Perry High School for three years before beginning his teaching career of 33 years at Fairport High School, retiring in 2000.  While at Fairport, he coached the Fairport Skippies 7th and 8th grade football teams, the J. V. boy’s basketball team and was Athletic Director for several years.

Dennis was also active in the Perry community, serving on the Perry Local Schools’ Board of Education for 20 years, during which time, the present Perry Schools Campus became a reality.  He was also a co-founder of Perry Schools Summer Recreation Program.

Dennis was a member of St. Cyprian Catholic Church since it was established as a parish.  He was part of the planning and construction of the church.

He was also a member of the past Perry Kiwanis Club, Lake County Retired Teachers Association and the Fairport Alumni Association. 

During his summer vacations and other spare time, he enjoyed building and remodeling for his family and friends. 

Surviving Dennis are his wife of 54 years, Shirley (Price) Laurie, his son Greg and wife Angie, 3 grandsons, Jacob, Drew and Luke; his sister Sharon (Dennis) Rose, his brother, Don (Priscilla) Laurie, step-father, Clyde Drews, his sister-in law, Janice Price, and brother-in-law, Carl (Barbara) Price, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Beth Ann Laurie; Parents; Maternal Grandparents; Paternal Grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio. Funeral mass will be 11:00 AM Friday at St. Cyprian’s Catholic Church, 4223 Middle Ridge Road, Perry, Ohio, with Father George Kusy officiating. Burial will be at Perry Cemetery on Center Road in Perry.
