Mary Magdalene Youdath Demeter, affectionately known as Muncie, age 90 of Vero Beach, Florida and Mentor, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on June 23rd, 2016 at Salida Woods Assisted Living Home in Mentor, Ohio. Muncie’s love was endless for her family, friends, and Catholic faith.

She was born on September 18th, 1925 in Painesville, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Youdath, owners and operators of the Youdath Nurseries.

Muncie graduated from Harvey High School and continued throughout her life to be involved in the alumni association. She was one of the first students to enroll in the new Lakeland Community College when the college held classes in Downtown Painesville.

Muncie was a licensed cosmetologist and operated a beauty salon in Painesville. She married the love of her life, the late Dr. E.V. Demeter, on August 9th, 1947. They remained married for the next 50 years.

Shortly after her first child was born, Muncie contracted the Polio virus. She was confined to an ‘Iron Lung’ for 6 months. She recovered from the disease and against Doctor’s orders, bore and raised 4 more children.

The Catholic Church was a very significant part of Muncie’s life. She was one of the founding members of St. Gabriel’s Parish in Mentor and also of the Christ Child Society of the Western Reserve. She was a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered with the Heavenly Dusters Club at St. Gabriel’s Church.

Muncie was very involved in community activities. She was a member of the Madison Country Club, the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club, and the Serra Club of Lake County. She was a member of the Lake County Medical Society and Medical Alliance. Her husband, Pete, was a long time member of the Gyro Club and she was a proud ‘Gyrette’ and a lifetime member spouse of the Elks Lodge #549. Muncie was also a member of the Women’s Council for Hiram’s College.

She was a very talented artist, seamstress, and gardener. Her love for learning continued throughout her life.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Alice) Demeter of Mentor, Richard Demeter of Concord Twp., Chris (Nancy) of Vero Beach, Florida, Denise Demeter of Mentor, and Lisa (Dr. Charles) Cavaliere of Oldsmar, Florida; seven grandchildren, Alex, Andrew, Anna, Charles Jr., Christopher, Lauren, Taylor and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Elmer V. Demeter M.D. and her parents, Joseph and Mary Youdath and brothers, Joseph and Raymond Youdath.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00P.M. on Wednesday, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church at 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road in Concord Township,  where her family and many friends will celebrate Muncie’s life. Visitation services will be  on Tuesday, from 4-7 PM at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home at 667 Mentor Avenue in Painesville.

We would like to thank the staff at Salida Woods and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their loving care of Muncie.

The family suggests contributions to the donor’s choice of charity in Muncie’s name.
