Michael Anthony Maggiano II, 92 of Madison, Ohio, died on Friday, March 9 from a brain aneurysm. Michael, Mike, or ‘Papa Mike’ was an inventor, author, aerospace engineer, and composer - but his two biggest loves were fishing and making music with his friends, relatives, strangers or really anyone he ran into. It was not unusual for him, even into his 90’s, to bring a clarinet along to a concert ‘just in case’ they needed some help. And usually they did.
Born in Warren, Ohio - Michael lived in Minnesota, Arizona, Texas and Florida (and perhaps a few other places his family never knew about) playing in a variety of jazz and bluegrass bands across the country. After serving in World War II in the Pacific, Michael returned home to begin a family and long career in aerospace engineering and mechanics, working for many years for Martin Marietta.
Michael is preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Ronald, his daughter-in-law Laurie, and one great grandchild Audrey Grace. He is survived by his son David and David’s wife Evelyn, their two children Dillon and Brandon; as well as two grandchildren, Chase and Grey, their spouses Chris and Monica, and two great grandchildren Nicolas and Isabella Ruth.
Michael spent much of his last years with his best friend, partner in music and fishing buddy Joan Quigley of Painesville. They attended St. James Episcopal Church, fished, laughed, complained about politics, and played in two local bands - the Concordia Community band and the Geauga County Fair Band.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Painesville at 4 pm on Monday March 26th. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Music Ministry of St. James Episcopal Church, 131 North State Street, Painesville, Ohio 44077.
