Alice
Urban
August 14, 1914 – May 20, 2014
Alice passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Altercare of Mentor, May 20, 2014. Born August 15, 1914 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada to Pierre and Albertine (Blouin) Graillon. Alice married Charles Carrigan on April 17, 1937 in Sherbrooke. After their marriage, Charlie and Alice moved to Massachusetts and then to Utica, NY. By then they had two daughters, Connie and Barbara. Jobs were scant during the 40's, so they took a chance and moved to Havanna, Cuba. Alice spoke French, English, and then learned Spanish, of which, she spoke fluently until about one year ago. In 1945 they settled in Painesville after leaving Cuba. Alice studied hard and on November 8, 1946 became a United States citizen at the Painesville Court House. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed for many people. Alice made velvet drapes for the altar for then, temporary St. Gabriel Church. She was an avid swimmer and tried to save two men from the dangerous undertow of Lake Erie, but only one survived. She was very active in St. Mary Mother's Club and the church's Lawn Fete. She made many doll dresses for the dolls that were raffled at the Fete. One of the happiest times in Charlie and Alice's lives was babysitting their first granddaughter, Debbie. When Charlie's job at the Industrial Rayon Corp. ended in the early 70's, they moved to Millersburg, Ohio for employment. They took another leap of fate and moved to New Port Richey, Florida, where they resided for 17 yrs. until Charlie's death in 1987. Alice remained in Florida and later married Albert Urban. After Al's death in 1995, Alice moved back to Painesville. Alice is survived by her daughters, Connie (Bob) Coffman and Barbara (Roger) Roush; grandchildren, Debbie Rasmussen, Darlene (Bob) Bates, Jeffrey (Bridget) Roush, Joan O'Brien, Kelly (Don) Sharpnack, Andrew (Joann) Roush, and Paul (Jennifer) Roush; great grandchildren, Justin (Jessica) Rasmussen, Hanna, Hollis, and Sidney Roush, Sean O'Brien, Megan (Nick) Keatley, Shelby and Mark Sharpnack, Jackson and Abigail Roush, and Emily, Nathan, and Lauren Roush; great great-granddaughter, Madelyn Keatley; step great granddaughter, Kristen (Greg) Taylor, and three great-great grandsons. She also leaves nieces and nephews in Canada and in several states. Alice was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, siblings, Felix, Lucien, Alda, Eva, Lucia, Jeannette, and several nieces and a nephew in Canada. The family wishes to acknowledge the staff and caregivers at Altercare of Mentor for nearly 10 wonderful years they cared for Alice and to Crossroads Hospice for the excellent care, especially in her final days. However, a very special appreciation for Joe Edwards (Joey, as she would call him), who took such exceptional care of her. He would put a smile on her face every single day. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alice's memory may be made to: St. Anthony of Padua Church, 316 Fifth St., Fairport Harbor, OH 44077 or to Crossroads Hospice, 9775 Rockside Rd., Suite 270, Valley View, OH, 44125.
