David Downing

David Downing, age 63, passed away April 26, 2026 at his home in Fairport Harbor. He was born on October 20, 1962, to Cynthia (Hurst) Downing and James S. Downing (deceased).

David was a hard working insurance agent, but his great loves in life were music, boats, cars, friends and family.

He was a talented and accomplished musician who played the bass guitar and many other instruments. He was a member of Cleveland band Oroboros in the 1980’s & 1990’s, and more recently, The Crystal Ball Band. He had cherished friends with whom he played in many different garage bands, basement bands and backyard bands. Music and musicians were central to his life.

David spent much of his childhood on Lake Erie, both sailing competitively and on fast and slow power boats, but mostly fast. He spent much of his free time reading and learning about boats.

He was an excellent driver who loved cars and cherished his time driving, learning about and discussing everything about sports cars. As the co-owner of the A-1 Driving School in the 1990’s, he was instrumental in helping many people learn how to drive safely, something he valued greatly.

David had a dry wit which was appreciated by all who knew him. He had a unique way with words, which will be missed dearly by his friends and family.

David is survived by his mother, Cynthia Downing, sister, Lisa Bates (David), sister, Abigail Kovach (Nathan), stepmother, Rosemary Downing, former wife, Josie Lahr, cherished nephews and nieces and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, James Downing and brother Jeffrey Downing.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
