Elisabeth A. M. Schormuller, 89, passed away after a brief illness on October 29, 2026, at Reserve Care Hospice in Cleveland, Ohio. She was born August 31, 1937, in Painesville, Ohio to Anton Schormuller and Margaret (Novak) Schormuller.
Miss Schormuller was a legendary science teacher who dedicated over 40 years to teaching at Mentor High School and Mentor Shore Junior High. She coached highly successful academic teams during her tenure, including the school's Academic Challenge team and foundational science programs that paved the way for modern competitive clubs like Science Olympiad. She was renowned for holding her students to exceptionally high standards, requiring her lab assistants to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, while at the same time making subjects like chemistry entertaining. Her impact as an incredible teacher was felt by three generations of students inspiring them to learn science and help establish a foundation for success later in life. She worked every summer at the Lake County Fair in Painesville, Ohio, where her many years of teaching experience were highlighted for bringing educational value and learning moments to fair attendees.
Her commitment to lifesaving work on behalf of animals in need was well known. She was a supporter of Rescue Village and their Tails at Twilight Gala. Through the years, she rescued countless cats and dogs and made sure they had loving homes. Caring for her animals kept her going and gave her purpose. Part of that effort included making hundreds of beautiful and practical throws to keep pets and their owners warm and comfortable.
Miss Schormuller was an active conservationist tied directly to the local marsh and park ecosystems. Historically, she served as a representative for the Blackbrook Audubon Society headquartered near her house on Corduroy Road next to the marsh trailheads and worked to protect the dunes and wetlands that border Headlands Beach.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Painesville since childhood. She served on the Fall Auction Committee for over 10 years and was a member and officer of the St. Vincent DePaul team providing food, clothing, and financial help for those in need; She would always try to do something special for the children at Christmastime. Liz was very kind, caring, and generous. No matter what she was going through, if somebody needed something, she would always make sure they received help. She wore many hats in her lifetime, but the most important was friend for life to all she loved.
Miss Schormuller was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Margaret S. Hughes of Chatham, New Jersey, whom she spoke to every morning at 8:00 AM; two nephews, Stephen R. Hughes of Ventnor City, NJ and Eric A. Hughes (Melissa) of Madison, NJ.; two grandnieces, two grandnephews, and one great grandnephew.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 242 North State Street, Painesville. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
