Obituary

Marguerite (Meg) Edith Carter was born in Euclid Ohio to Alice Catherine (Fletcher) Carter and James Albert Carter on September 24, 1953. The eldest of six children, Meg was a voracious student, excelling academically from a young age; she received her Bachelor's in English, Humanities and Education (cum laude) from Wittenberg University in 1975, followed by a Masters in English from Fordham University (1981), a Masters in Writing from the University of San Francisco (1991), and a Certificate of Theological Studies from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (2005.)

Bilingual in French and Hebrew, Meg was a perpetual traveler who helped people and made meaningful connections wherever she went. Her curiosity for novel experience was matched only by her drive to communicate and connect with others through writing, music, and faith. Studying abroad at Exeter University in England and touring Spain and Portugal with the Wittenberg choir nurtured an early interest in novel people, places, and service to others; Wittenberg was quickly followed by Meg's first assignment as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal where she taught English as a Foreign Language between 1975 – 1977. Returning to the United States, Meg lived in New York City and Los Angeles before settling in Oakland, California.

After a 20 year career as an Information Technology professional and educator, Meg retired from her position as an Assistant Vice President at Bank of America, taking a year-long sabbatical to volunteer as an English Language Coordinator in Palestine and an IT Specialist in Uganda as part of the Peace Corp's Crisis Corps. Returning to the San Francisco Bay Area, Meg became a Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional and served as a Senior Analyst for Ethics Investigations at the University of California Office of the President. In 2010, Meg returned to Africa for her final deployment with the Peace Corps, this time teaching English and Technical language skills to university students in Guinea. Parlaying years of direct experience with community building in Africa, Meg served as a Communication Specialist for ChildFund International in Richmond, Virginia, working primarily with international field offices to enhance the experience of sponsored children. Meg spent her final years reading and relaxing with her cat, listening to birdsong from her patio, organizing the agenda for the Northern California Returned Peace Corps Volunteer book club, and cooking exotic meals sourced from places she had already travelled or wanted to visit.

Meg passed away on April 16, 2021, from advanced Renal cancer; she was predeceased by her parents and sister Catherine, and survived by her daughter Michele Carter and siblings Robert Carter, John Carter, James Carter, and Ruth Maxon, nieces and nephews Robert, Timothy, Sarah, Andrew, Ian, Courtney, Nathan, Madeline, and William.
