It is with sadness that we report the death of Mary Martha (Powers) Sabol, 75, a lifetime resident of Lake County. Martha passed away at Lake West Hospital on Friday, July 10, after suffering a stroke eleven days prior on Tuesday, June 30, 2015.
As the eldest of five children, Martha was born on October 11, 1939 in Painesville to Joseph and Hannah (Nugent) Powers. She attended St. Mary School in Painesville, graduated from Villa Angela Academy in 1957, and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education from Ursuline College in 1961.
Martha began her teaching career at her alma mater, St. Mary 's in Painesville, in 1961 with a class roster of 52 seventh grade girls. She went on to teach at Adult Basic Education, Huntington Elementary School, and then Hobart Middle School in Painesville for the remainder of her thirty-year career. It is there that she made lifelong friends.
Martha was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church in Painesville where she served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Bereavement Committee. In addition to her church involvement, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and her pets.
Survivors are her brother, Thomas Powers (Loretta) of Coloma, Michigan and sister, Kathleen P. Dolney of Painesville; nephew, Martin Powers of Orland Park, Illinois; nieces, Jennifer Powers of Chicago, Illinois and Meghan Dolney of Cleveland; granddaughter, Emily Sabol; and son, John Sabol.
Martha was preceded in death by her beloved parents and brothers, Martin Powers and Edward Powers; and husband, Emil Sabol.
Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, July 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 242 N. State St., Painesville. Burial will be in Riverside St. Mary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha's memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Group of St. Mary Church or Hospice of the Western Reserve 5786 Heisley Rd. Mentor, OH 44060.
