Richard Henry Shimek, age 87, passed away August 20, 2022, at his residence in Painesville. He was born October 3, 1934, in Painesville to John and Marietta (Hauser) Shimek.
Richard served in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer and was a Staff Sargent in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for Lyden Oil Company in Youngsown, Ohio, retiring in 1997.
Richard lived in the Painesville area for over 58 years. He enjoyed building and running model planes, trains, steam engines, and ships, woodworking, painting, sculpting, carving. Visits with his 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren were the highlight of his days. Richard was always working on something around the house or in one of his workshops. For his 87th birthday, he bought himself a bulldozer. When asked what he was going to do with it, his response was "Well, after I straighten out the driveway, I'm going to build a train and track for the backyard."
Richard is survived by his children, Richard Dale Shimek (Barb Huntington) of Painesville, Theresa Ann (Charles) Hare of Willoughby Hills and Deborah Sue Shimek (Jay Storm) of Painesville; brother, Paul (Janet) Shimek, and companion for the past 23 years, Diane Lasecki. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean Shimek in 1999; son, Timothy Allen Shimek in 2018; brothers, John Shimek, James Shimek and Albert Shimek; sisters, Martha Shimek and Marie Shimek; grandchildren, Ryan Shimek and Jason May.
Graveside Services will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 26, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17865 St. Clair Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44110.
