It is with a sad heart we announce the passing of Shirley A. (Bensel) Cook age 79 of Perry Ohio. Shirley was the daughter of Arthur and Virginia (Jewell) Bensel born on October 15, 1942, in Cleveland and passed away October 2, 2022, at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
Shirley was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Fairport Harbor. For most of her life she was dedicated to serving patients as a Dental Assistant and Receptionist. She spent many years committed to the Painesville Dental Free Clinic.
She graduated from Eastlake North High School in 1960. Shirley was active and loved to roller-skate and waterski.
Shirley loved the water, boating and spent her summers at the Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club where her father was Commodore as well as at her family's cabin in UP Michigan.
Most important to Shirley was her family. She was married for more than 40 years. She was so proud of her husband, children and grandchildren and would be the 1st to tell you of their latest accomplishments.
She was a passionate snowmobiler with her husband Lewis and volunteered over the years in many ways to support the sport. Shirley was a past treasurer for the Ohio State Snowmobile Association, past treasurer for the Grand River Snowmobiling Club, and a member of the Thompson Ledge Runners. In 2011 she was awarded snowmobiler of the year. One of Shirley's proudest accomplishments was her fundraising of $27,000.00 through snowmobiling for the Easter Seals.
In the last years Shirley and her husband Lou enjoyed playing card games like Hand and Foot or Click with their friends and family. She would visit the Painesville YMCA several times a week for water exercise and fun times with her Y friends.
Shirley is survived by her husband Lewis E. Cook, daughter; Beth A. Pollack (Mark Pollack) Stepdaughters; Barbara Cook-Simkoff and Denise Kato. Sister; Carolyn Bolster, Grandchildren; Cupar Meikle and Brady Pollack, Bailey Simkoff-Wilkinson (Jordan), Leah Simkoff, Shawn (Elizabeth) Cocchi, Shayne (Melissa) Cocchi, Great-grandchildren; Jaxon, Logan, Mason, Lucciano and Julien Cocchi
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation for Family and Friends will be Friday October 7th, 2022, from 4-7 PM at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Homes at 667 Mentor Avenue. Family and friends may also call Saturday October 8th at Zion Lutheran Church from
10-11 with a service to follow.
Interment will be held at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland Ohio following the service.
The family invites you back for a luncheon following the internment at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairport.
