William (Bill) James Calhoun, Sr, age 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, December 29, 2022 at Avanti Senior Living in Covington, Louisiana. He leaves behind a wife, 3 children, 6 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and loads of friends who loved him dearly.
Bill was born March 23, 1947, in Painesville, Ohio, oldest son of Joseph and Freda Calhoun. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jo Norcini, and his daughter, Cathleen Calhoun. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barb Calhoun; his children, Christina Augustine (Steven), William Calhoun, Jr., and Shawn Calhoun (Cory); six grandchildren, Keith Augustine, Carolyn Augustine, Cole Derenbecker, Chase Derenbecker, Madison Calhoun, and Mackenzie Calhoun; his siblings Kathy Spence (Tom) and Joseph Calhoun, Jr. (Janice).
In addition to being a loving and devoted father and grandfather, Bill was a lifelong learner. After graduating from Harvey High School in Painesville, Ohio (Class of 1965), he went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business, from St. Mary's College in Moraga, California (Class of 2004). Bill was employed by Caterpillar Inc for over 35 years in Ohio, Louisiana, Illinois, and California where he enjoyed raising his family, playing golf, and spoiling the grandkids, nieces, and nephews with donuts and ice cream.
Bill was a US Army Veteran serving in Vietnam. He devoted his life to serving our country and giving back to Army Veterans via the Greater Peoria Honor Flight program where he would serve meals and escort military veterans to Washington D.C.
Bill also served as the President of Painesville Ohio Little League from 1978 - 1980. During that time, he brought the Ohio State Little League Championship to Painesville. He also coached several Little League and baseball teams alongside his father, Joe Calhoun, Sr.
Friends will be received from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio.
A Memorial Mass will also be held on Saturday, June 17th, at 12:00 Noon, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road in Concord Township. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601.
