William John Sopchak, age 91, passed away February 1, 2022, at Vista Springs in Concord Township, Ohio.  He was born October 16, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to John and Barbara (Petrush) Sopchak.

William served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.  He was a guidance counselor for the Willoughby Schools System. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church.  William was active in the Concord Township Community, acting as Recreation Director for 20 years, Concord Community Day organizer, and was honored as the Concord Citizen of the Year in 1997.   He refereed football and basketball for 55 years, was secretary for the Northeast Ohio Referee Association for 23 years, a member of the Lake County Touchdown Club, and inducted into the OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame in 2009.

William is survived by his daughter, Cammie (Kevin) Berger; son, William (Linda) Sopchak Jr.; grandchildren, Kelsey, Kara and Kent Berger, Adam, Joshua, and Matthew Sopchak; sister, Barbara (John) Balzer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene (Barber) Sopchak; brothers, Charlie Ballay, Frank Ballay and John Ballay; sister, Margaret Samko.

Friends will be received from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Friday, February 11, 2022, at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Saturday, February 12th at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township.  Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery.
