Donald Pietila Obituary

Donald Albert Pietila, age 66, passed away December 27, 2021.  He was born February 18, 1955, in Painesville, to Albert Allan and Margaret Marie (Leczo) Pietila. He was very proud of his Finnish and Hungarian heritage.

After graduating from Harvey High School he proudly earned his Associates Degree from Penn State University. A proud member of the Operating Engineers, Local 18, Donnie received his life membership award on February 20, 2010, and recently reached his 40 years of membership on February 20, 2020. He was on multiple high profile projects across Northeast Ohio. Don was instrumental in training apprentices and younger operators on his jobs. He was considered to be one of the best in his field, keeping “safety first” in mind and ending with finesse on every job.

In his youth he was active in Harvey’s Swim Team and was a member of the speed skating team at Painesville Roller Rink.

He was active for many years as a member of Ram Island Boat Club and the Grand River Association. He was a life member of the Hungarian Culture Club.

Snowmobiling became a favorite winter hobby and he enjoyed great runs with good friends and family. NASCAR racing was another passion and enjoyed many years going to the Michigan race with friends and Ryan. He always looked forward to his many vacations on the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and Marathon, Florida. He loved getting together with his cousins to make Hungarian sausage.  He always put on the best clambakes and loved to turn up the “Rock N Roll”.  He was a fan of all Cleveland sports teams especially the Browns and enjoyed many tailgates with Ryan. He took pride in all that he did.

Donald is survived by his Wife, Leslie (Smith) Pietila, Son, Ryan Charles Pietila, Brother, Dennis Pietila, Sister, Patricia Lohrey, and Sister and Brother-in-law, Sherrie (Smith) and Robert Blivens. He also leaves behind many close family members and friends.
