Fred E. Armstrong, age 88, passed away peacefully surrounded and loved by his family on April 22, 2025. He was born December 18, 1936 in Painesville.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Lake County. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954 – 1958. After his Military service, he committed his career to the Fire service. He began his career in the Grand River Fire Department in 1958. He was instrumental in the creation of the Painesville Twp Fire Department in 1966. At its inception, Fred served the department as Training Captain. He became Assistant Chief then was promoted to Fire Chief from 1989 – 1992. During his tenure as Chief, he took on the Christmas for Every Child Program which intended to make sure all kids in the greater Painesville community received a gift at Christmas.
Fred enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family at Mohican State Park and most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren.
Fred is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy (Hooper) Armstrong; daughters, Kim (John Crawford) Armstrong, Tracey (Tom) Sitz; son Rich (Darleen) Armstrong; Grandchildren, Jayme (Kyle) Skoczen, Lauren (Eric) Mackovjak, Zack Sitz, Alexis (Brandon) Armstrong, Connor Armstrong; Great Granddaughters Lennon & Hazel Mackovjak. And many nieces, nephews and their families.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Virginia (Fogle) Armstrong and brothers, Don, Jimmy, Billy and sister Anna.
Friends will be received 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM followed by a Firefighters Service and Military Honors.
His family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Fairmount Health Center- Breckenridge Village as well as his team from Hospice of the Western Reserve for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve in Fred’s name.
