James M. Cardina

James M. Cardina, age 85, passed away March 17th, 2023, at his residence in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. He was born March 30th, 1937 to Dominic and Florabell (Stange) Cardina.

James retired from the Lake County Sheriffs department after 35 years. He played an important role in the building of the new Lake County Jail, where he served as the Jail Administrator.  He was the President of the board for Fairport Port Authority, and was active in the Fairport Mardi Gras for 50 years. He coached the Painesville Ponytail softball league and was the head coach of the Sunday women’s softball league. He also enjoyed golfing and spending time with his golf buddies.  James was instrumental in building and completing the construction of the Cardina Field on East Street in Fairport.  James was very active in the Fairport community, always giving back.  He was a member of Parents Who Care, creating safe fun for teens in the Village. He was a councilman in the Village. James enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grand and great grandchildren.

James is survived by his son, John Cardina, daughters; Jeanne (Rick) Safick and Jodi (Chris) Trombley. Sisters; Margaret (Tom) Alanen, Mary (Mike) Nahorniak. Grandchildren; Nicole (Chuck) Kroeger, Katie and Kristen McFadden, Ron (Shannon) McFadden. Scott (Tabby) McFadden; Great grandchildren; Connor, Emerysen , Ariana, Kara, Madisen, Abby and Nate.  He had many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois (Ashman) Cardina, who he was married to for 58 years,  parents and his sister Grace Hogya.

Calling hours will be held Monday March 20th, 2023 from 4:00-7:00pm at Mulqueeny Spear Funeral Home 312 Eagle St. Fairport Ohio. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday March 21st, 2023 at 10:00am at the funeral home.
