Joyce Anne Chorman, age 92 1/2, passed away November 8, 2024, in Mentor, Ohio. She was born April 11, 1932, in Painesville to Claude and Almira (Babcock) Jolliffe.
Joyce was a 1950 graduate of Harvey High School where she was active in many clubs and was on the National Honor Society for four years. She was a long-time member of First Church Congregational where she volunteered in various capacities.
Joyce worked at Educational Supply in Painesville for her Grandfather Eldon Babcock whilst in high school. In addition of raising five girls with her husband Carl Chorman, she also helped with the accounting of Chorman’s Floor Covering. This eventually led to a full-time job at Federal Hose Manufacturing when her youngest child was in high school.
Joyce was active in the Mentor community. She wrote for the Mentor Monitor, even helping mimeograph pages and distribute papers. She was the President of the Mentor Headlands Women’s Club, where she was instrumental in developing the Community Center and various community activities such as the annual July 4th parade, the Mrs. Headlands beauty pageant, adult dances, youth groups, and a Santa parade through out the Headlands ending at the Community Center with gifts for kids.
Joyce was the President of the PTA and helped get the first board started at Sterling Morton elementary school. She served on the Executive Committee for the Mentor High School PTA Circus in both ticketing and concessions. She was inducted into the MHS Circus Hall of Fame alongside her husband Carl.
She’s always enjoyed watching sports and was a long-suffering Cleveland sports fan. She loved roller-skating as a young adult, and it was at a roller-skating rink that she met her future husband. She took up golf to join her husband and participated in various leagues and tournaments, including traveling to and playing at various golf courses across the country. She also became, to the annoyance of her husband, the only one in the family to score a hole in one.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years (2007) Carl Harris Chorman, and her father Claude (Ruth) Jolliffe, mother Almira (Art) Gustason, and sister Joanne (Jolliffe) King. She is survived by her sisters Jan (Doug) Pomfrey of Painesville Ohio and Claudia Jolliffe of Naples Florida.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Kathy (Steve) Flora of Cleveland Heights, Debbie (Jim) Middleton of Madison, Sue Blabolil of Madison, Cindy (David, deceased) Barnhart of North Huntingdon PA, and Vicki Chorman of Columbus; grandchildren, Beth (Dan) Hixson, Amy (Tom) Hurst, James Middleton, Joe (Falicia) Middleton, Cory (Angela) Blabolil, Casey (Alison) Blabolil, Katie (Steve) Smith, Heather (BJ) Bacha, Tiffany (Gary) Hitchins, Little One Chorman; great-grandchildren, Sam Hixson, Emma (James) McLean, Brett (Lena) Hixson, Madeline (fiancée Reid Bolen) Hurst, Brycen (Isabelle) Hurst, Aislyn Hurst, Cohen Hurst, Gillian Hurst, Logan Middleton, Riley Middleton, Madison Blabolil, Sofia Bacha, Stella Hitchins, Gary Hitchins; and great-great grandchild, Noelle Hixson.
