The Reverend Joseph Cappelletti, Senior Priest, retired, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
Joseph Cappelletti was born on June 25, 1930, in Norma, Italy. He entered the Brothers of St. Joseph Community in Italy at the age of 19. He attended the University of Albuquerque, in New Mexico, John Carroll University in University Heights and St. Mary Seminary in Wickliffe. As a Brother of St. Joseph he taught at Lourdes High School in Albuquerque for 5 years and at Elyria Catholic High School, from 1965 to 1978. On June 12, 1982, in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop Anthony M. Pilla ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Fr. Cappelletti’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of Holy Redeemer, Cleveland. On June 28, 1984, he was transferred to St. Mary Church in Painesville to serve as Parochial Vicar. He was then assigned to St. Clare, Lyndhurst on June 21, 1994. On June 13, 2000, he was assigned as Parochial Vicar of St. Dominic, Shaker Heights and then he was transferred on June 12, 2002, to serve at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Wickliffe. On June 5, 2007, Fr. Cappelletti retired.
Fr. Joseph will always be remembered for his kind heart and gentle nature. He loved the priesthood, St. Mary Seminary and was grateful to be a member of the Presbyterate of Cleveland.
The wake will begin with Vespers on Monday, June 22, 2021, at St. Mary Church, 242 North State Street, Painesville, Ohio at 3:00 PM. Bishop Edward C. Malesic will be the presider and Fr. Steve Vellenga will be the homilist. The wake will continue until 7:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at St. Mary Church at 11:00 AM. Bishop Martin J. Amos will be the main celebrant and Fr. David Bline will be the homilist. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Painesville.
