Robert D. "Daddio" Grove, age 88, passed away peacefully December 22, 2020 at Danbury of Mentor. He was born April 14, 1932 in Lonaconing Maryland to John and Isabelle (Truly) Grove. He married Carole Marie Winters in 1954. They resided in Mentor together for 61 years until her passing in 2016.
Robert was employed for over 43 years by LTV Steel (formerly Republic Steel) as an overhead crane operator, retiring in 1994. After retirement he spent many hours working on wood crafting and would often sell some of his work at local craft shows. He also became a longtime volunteer at Heartland of Mentor where he earned himself the name of “Daddio”. Everyone that met him just loved him. He also played the roll of “Santa” for many years to the Heartland residents.
Robert was the nephew of Hall of Fame Baseball player, Robert “Lefty” Grove who pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox from the 1920’s till the 1940’s. Robert himself had baseball in his blood as he also played for the Boston Red Sox farm team in the early 1950’s.
Robert is survived by his daughters, Kathryn A. (Edward) McCarthy, and Linda M. (Martin) Gerhardt, and his son, Robert F. Grove (Julie Hutson); grandchildren Shannon K. Svigel, Carrie L. Trammel, Brian P. McCarthy, Heather M. Seaman, Christian R. Gerhardt, Rachel L. Gerhardt, and Jacob W. Gerhardt; and eight great grandchildren. (Jayden, Alyssa, Dylan, Olivia, Addison, Briana, Jett, and Farrah).
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole Marie Winters; sister, Ruth Gilpin, and his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2020. Friends may call 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2020 at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio. Burial will be Tuesday in the Mentor Cemetery.
