William Mackey Obituary

William L. Mackey, age 79, passed away surrounded by family on June 9, 2023, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital after battling a brief illness.  He was born October 23, 1943, in Painesville to William M. and Elizabeth T. Mackey.

Bill was a man who lived a life through example and preferred to avoid the spotlight. His hard work, love and determination can be seen through the legacy of his life garnering him a title many refer to as “an honorable man.”

After graduating from Fairport Harding High School in 1961, he went on to obtain a degree in Economics from Ashland College. From there, he started his career as a math teacher and coach at Mentor Memorial Junior High. His part-time summer job with Osborne Inc, eventually led to his full-time career of 39 years.  He became the President and Treasurer of the company. Bill also served as a member of multple board of directors before retiring in 2015.

Bill's passion, love, and talent for sports was passed down through his family.  He received individual awards at his high school alma mater.  However, being the humble person that he was, he always placed emphasis on team success over individual accomplishments. He carried that same mentality throughout his life as he treated everyone he encountered with respect, compassion and dignity.

Of all his accomplishments, Bill was most proud of his family. After 56 years of marriage, he and his wife remained best friends. In late, they could often be found spending time at “The Acres” enjoying an array of outdoor activities. He always looked forward to attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and being involved in their lives. You would often find Bill in his chair watching sports with Cassie, a white bichon frise, on his lap. His close-knit family attributes their family first mentality to his example. Additionally, he also enjoyed attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison with his sister, nephew, and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret “Marge” Mackey; sons, Scott Mackey, Brian (Rachele) Mackey, and Billy (Janeese) Mackey; brothers, Thomas Mackey and Darryl (Susan) Maenpaa; sister, Nancy (Andrew) Lombardy; grandchildren, Bailey (Jose) Llamas, Peyton, Mason, Sydney, Julia, Jason, and Logan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, David Mackey and Gordon Mackey.
