William "Doug" Reed Obituary

William Douglas Reed, age 76, a lifelong resident of Mentor, passed away on April 6, 2022, at Tripoint Medical Center in Concord Township. Doug was born January 15,1946, in Mentor, OH to J. Richard “Dick” Reed and Catherine Reed.

Doug contracted encephalitis at age 2. Allergic to penicillin, he endured high fevers, which left him with many developmental and mental disabilities. Despite these challenges, Doug was known for his gentle and joyful spirit, quick-witted sense of humor, manners, and gift of gab.

Douglas was an avid sports fan with a passion for Major League Baseball, especially the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers. A lover of the television game show Jeopardy, he could recite facts and trivia about sports, states and former presidents.

Doug was a client of the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities and worked in various sheltered Industries for four decades. After living with his parents next door to the Mentor Library for his first 55 years, he spent the past 21 years at a group home for men with disabilities, “the Heisley House” in Mentor. He loved both his Reed Family and Heisley House Family.
